Banjul, The Gambia - On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) Gambia Office commemorated the 75th anniversary of the WHO, reflecting on its birth in 1948 and the tremendous achievements that have shaped global health over the past seven decades. Established with the vision to promote health, ensure global safety, and serve the vulnerable, WHO has been instrumental in advancing the highest level of health and well-being for everyone, everywhere.

Dr. Desta Tiruneh, the representative of the WHO Gambia Office, expressed gratitude during the event to the government of The Gambia, representatives of WHO Member States, colleagues from the United Nations system, donor partners, and all contributors who played a pivotal role in the institution's success. Dr. Tiruneh acknowledged their unwavering commitment, emphasizing the significant impact WHO has made in improving health outcomes, addressing global health challenges, and shaping the future of healthcare. "Through its relentless dedication to serving humanity, WHO has built trust as a guardian of public health, providing critical support to countries in times of crisis and ensuring the well-being of billions around the world," stated Dr. Tiruneh. He highlighted WHO's crucial role in strengthening health systems, advocating for universal health coverage, and promoting equitable access to life-saving medicines and vaccines. The WHO country representative applauded the organization's achievements in addressing pressing global health issues, including mental health promotion and the reduction of non-communicable diseases. He underscored the collaborative efforts with development partners, emphasizing the success in swift detection and containment of outbreaks through improved public health emergency response mechanisms.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator in The Gambia, Ms. Seraphine Wakana, joined the celebration, describing WHO as a beacon of hope, a symbol of global cooperation, and a guardian of public health over the past 75 years. Acknowledging WHO's instrumental role in mitigating health emergencies, crises, and pandemics worldwide, she emphasized the organization's commitment to the highest possible level of health for all people.

Hon. Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, commended WHO for its remarkable achievements in improving global health outcomes and expressed gratitude for the support extended to the Ministry. He particularly highlighted the leadership of Dr. Desta Tiruneh in responding to Covid-19, measles, and Acute Kidney Injury outbreaks in The Gambia. Dr. Samateh called for increased funding at country offices, emphasizing the need for a tactical approach to address health inequities and respond effectively to targeted healthcare needs. He stressed the importance of universal health coverage, strengthened surveillance, and pandemic preparedness in addressing the unprecedented challenges facing global health.
